ISLAMABAD: The election of Sadiq Sanjrani as Senate chairman was challenged in the Supreme Court on Thursday. The applicant in his petition pleaded that the Senate chairman acts as president of Pakistan during the latter’s absence from the country.
The petition maintained that the minimum age for acting president is 45 years as written in the constitution while Sanjrani is around 40 years old, hence he is ineligible to act as president of Pakistan.
The petition pleaded the court to order fresh election for the post of the Senate chairman. Sanjrani,
who was backed by the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), secured 57 votes compared to 46 of PML-N’s candidate Raja Zafarul Haq in election for the top slot in the Upper House.
