Gilgit-Baltistan is facing a dual challenge as a long-standing boundary dispute between Ghizer and Diamer communities has resurfaced during devastating floods that continue to damage lives and property. Officials confirmed that tensions in the Singal Nallah area escalated on Monday when armed men were seen near the disputed land, a day after floods struck both districts severely.
Government spokesperson Faizullah Faraq said the administration is making serious efforts to resolve the issue peacefully while ensuring impartiality and professionalism. He emphasized that the writ of the state would not be compromised, urging residents to remain united. Describing Gilgit-Baltistan as “a bouquet of diverse flowers,” he appealed to communities to focus on their shared cultural, linguistic, and social ties during this crisis.
Furthermore, Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan has convened a high-level meeting to address the situation, while peace committees and local elders have been engaged to reduce tensions. Security has also been tightened, with G-B Scouts deployed on both sides of the disputed boundary. Police and other security agencies are assisting to prevent violence and safeguard residents.
At the same time, floods have wreaked havoc across Gilgit-Baltistan, creating a massive humanitarian challenge. A seven-kilometre-long artificial lake has formed in Ghizer district after flash floods, leaving communities cut off and in urgent need of relief. Ghizer and Diamer remain among the worst-hit districts, with damaged infrastructure and displaced families requiring immediate support.
Faraq stressed that at a time when natural disasters are causing immense suffering, the priority must be rehabilitation and helping flood victims. He added that disputes could be resolved later through jirgas and negotiations but insisted that solidarity and cooperation are the immediate need. Transitioning into unity, he reminded residents that only joint efforts can overcome the hardships of disaster.
Finally, officials reassured that rehabilitation efforts are underway, with relief operations being accelerated in flood-affected regions. However, they warned that further instability could worsen the suffering of already vulnerable communities. Authorities urged residents to show restraint, maintain peace, and prioritize compassion, declaring that unity is the only path forward during these testing times for Gilgit-Baltistan.
